  • INTRODUCTION

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease characterised by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Glucose level may rise above 30mmol on measuring with Glucometer. Diabetes Mellitus is of two types. Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and type 2.

The condition is a major problem in Africa and is common in Nigeria.

It is called the silent killer because most people with Diabetes Mellitus do not know they have it until their glucose level is measured or develop complications. Diabetes Mellitus affects all age groups depending on the type of diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes Mellitus is a major cause of damage to tiny blood vassels. Renal impairement, brain damage, eye problems, hypertension, and heart problems. Diabetes Mellitus is of two types. Type 1  Diabetes Mellitus and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus depends on the cause and type of Diabetes Mellitus, but it is mostly dietary, medical and surgical. This case study is focused on clergy in Jos PCC living with Diabetes Mellitus and its effect on their ministry; this case study consists of two parts.

Part one deals with the related anatomy and physiology, Pathophysiology, clinical presentation, investigation, medical and nursing management while part two consist of the case study of  clergy with diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus has caused the death of many COCIN clergy in Jos PCC. Clergy living with this disease condition must follow certain rules to prolong their life-span. They need to go for check ups to prevent complications and bad prognosis. Clergy with this disease condition need to form a fellowship to educate and encourage each other.

Hence clergy that are careless about their health can be helped. Clergy that are educated concerning their health can help church members too in making decisions concerning their health.

Health committees need to be set up in every Provisional Church Council to over see the work. Health personnel should be posted to areas that have good health facilities. Health allowances should be given to the affected clergy promptly.  Because when proper attention is not given to the clergy with diabetes mellitus they may develop serious complications and may not put in their best in the ministry. They may retire early.

The ethno – religious conflicts and lack of payment of salaries by the Government is causing serious concern and poverty in the ministry.

Lots of families are devastated when the head of the family cannot provide for his family. The clergy sacrifices his salary to help the family. So the clergy gives to the member in stead of the member giving to the church.

Jos PCC has 12 RCCs and over 20 LCCs. The 12 RCCs are Jos Gigiring, Gyel, Fobur, Maijuju, Vwang, Kuru, Dadin Kowa, Du, Jos-Jarawa, and Toto.

Jos PCC is spread over a wide area. Even through the researcher desired to cover all the areas, she was able to cover most it but was able to cover most of the clergy’s with diabetes mellitus.

The PCC was created to promote cordial relationship between Headquarters and local church and encourage growth of the church and coordinate activities of the RCCs, LCCs, CCs. Because of this, the work load on the clergy may be much. This led to where we are writing about the PCC stress and we know stress can cause diabetes mellitus.
