CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION
    • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Organizations are conceptual formations. They are legal entities whose existence is made possible by the statutory provisions and the people who work to ensure their continuity.

Organizations have been know to be prone to continued conflicts. Tertiary institutions are organization and as such, not left out of the experience.

Many organizations approach the management of conflicts by assuming that conflict is unavoidable, it produce inappropriate reactions by the person incurred and it creates a polarization within the organization. However conflicts are perfectly natural and should be expected to occur.

According to Enadeghe (1990) as cited by Okpala (2009:2), managers must recognize conflict as it passes through a series of progressive stage: latent conflict (conditions exist but are not recognized); felt conflict (tension builds), manifest conflict (behavior apparent to others) and conflict aftermath (ended by resolution or suppression). It does not always  pass through all stages. Parties may be at the same stage simultaneously. Infact, we are aware that conflicts are inextricably worsening is most system.

Conflict is a struggle between oppositions. It is a direct outcome of disagreement between entities. That a total absence of conflict would be unbelievable, boring and strong indication that such conflicts are being suppressed.

The importance of conflict in an organization become static and boring and more so, conflict is not dysfunctional.

Jones (2000) in Okpala (2009:3) opined that organizational conflict is regarded as the discard that occurs when the goals, interests or values of different individuals or group are incompatible with those of individual or group block or frustrate each other in an attempt to achieve their objective. Conflict are inevitable part of organizational life, since the goals of different stakeholders such as managers and staff are often incompatible.

In the view of Adomi and Anie (2005), as quoted by Okpala (2009:3) conflict is a fact of life in any organization as long as people compete for jobs, resources, power, recognition and security. However, dealing with conflict is a great challenge to management.

It is on this backdrop that this research work seeks to critically examine the effect, of organizational conflict on workers’ performance in Nigeria public services with a particular references to tertiary institution, using Nnamdi Azikiwe University as a study.
