Background of the Study

The quality of the work force of any nation is directly dependent on the type of education given to the youth of the nation. The need to educate youth’s properly especially developing nation like Nigeria is therefore very important. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and a well planned educational system for children of today would equip the high quality manager’s, technologies, scientist, technocrats and leader in all fields of endeavour.

Olobode (2007) pointed out that children are the society, most valuable assets and people’s most precious possession. Observation from post primary institution includes a declining trend in the population of male students with regard to enrolment while that of female is on the increase.

Ayotunde Yoloye (2009) also pointed out that decline in male enrolment is not noticeable only in secondary schools in Ezeagu Local Government Are but also in entire Enugu State, at large as in the national report of situation and policy analysis as a base educational in Nigeria.

On the other hand, the population in the existing male secondary schools in Ezeagu particularly in Maria Assumpta Secondary School Akama Oghe is fast declining. During the occasion of High-mass annual fast celebrated on 15th August 2011 the principal of Maria Assumpta Secondary Schools Rev. Fr. Jude Dimonyekwuru presented the Ezeagy chairman Mr. Julius Ogbuke, chief of Akama Oghe Igwe K.O Ugwuozor and the entire community while welcoming the principals, teachers and students from difference schools in Ezeagu, he described the rate of which the population of males was drenching in our secondary schools as alarming. Education will serve a better purpose if it is embraced by both males and females. Male’s where ambitions in furthering their education because they saw certificate as meal tickets for prestigious job in public services.

For quite a long time now,, there has been a remarkable decline in males enrolment in Secondary Schools in Ezeagu Local Government Area, most of these male desert the schools for trading and other occupation that ensure quick financial returns. My own observation as a researcher many of them do not succeeded in trading and other occupations a lot of them resort to criminal activities, such social vices are very common in the area under the study.

Statement of the Problem

This ugly situation of decline in males enrolment in secondary schools in Ezeagu Local Government of Enugu State call for urgent concern and attention of our education planner, administrators, the citizen and indeed the Government of the country through the observation of the principal of Maria Assumpta Secondary School Akama Oghe. It is on this issue that I feel it is necessary to look into critical causes responsible for decline in male enrolment in some schools in Ezeagu

Purpose of the Study

The major aim of this study is to:

i           To access the impact of the desire to get rich quick on decline in males enrolment.

ii          To examine the role unemployment after schooling plays is discouraging males in secondary schools enrolment.

iii         To evaluate the impact or value and attitude of the society on the decline of male’s enrolment in secondary schools.

Significance of Study

The importance of this research lie in the factor that they key causes of the backwardness in decline on male enrolment in Secondary Schools in known for the general public to look into. Due to the uniqueness of the problems identified, Solution proffered and implications anticipated in this research work, it is expected to be of great important to the families in the world all over as it will enable them plan for the growth of their male children in academic especially in our country Nigeria. It is also be of good benefit to all males children who carryout the responsibility of being educated. The females’ children in Nigeria will also benefit from this study as it will help them to effectively on issues that create academic excellent in our country. When these causes all identified, it will go a long way as a stepping stone to wards providing solution to the problems.

Finally, it will guide the international community schools especially those in Ezeagu metropolis to put more effort in the pursuit of academic excellent.

Scope of the Study

This research work will try to review the causes of decline in male’s enrolment in Secondary schools in Ezeagu. The circumstance that gives rise to decline in the Male’s enrolment and relevant machining necessary to check it or necessary way  of providing a solution to it and it is made to fashion out the tendency of participation of every males children in our society in the case of education sector and a way forward to improve the standard of leaving towards development in our country.

Hypothesis

The research hypothesis on decline in males’ enrolment in secondary Schools are:

Ho        The desire to get rich quick does not contribute to decline in male enrolment                           

Hi         The desire to get rich quick contribute to decline in male enrolment in Secondary Schools.

Ho           The fear of unemployment after schooling does not discourage male enrolment in secondary schools.

Hi            The fear of unemployment after schooling discourage male enrolment in secondary schools.

Ho           The value and attitude of the society does not influence the decline in male enrolment in secondary schools.

Hi            The value and attitude of the society influence the decline in males enrolment in secondary schools.
