1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The development of seaport in Nigeria started in the mid 19th century in the era of explorers and trades. The Onne Nigeria port authority (NPA) Port-Harcourt commenced operation on 1st April 1955. 1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1.6   SCOPE/DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

It was not easy conducting this research as there existed a death of publishing information on the organization under study. The economic and social responses of the workers which the researcher encountered were unadulterated, having come from workers passing through, say of complete illiteracy to semi-literacy, with leader only a little better than rank and file members of the unions.

Time factors also contributed to limitations of this study. The researcher was able to gather relevant information through personal contacts and questionnaires, which to some workers need to be explained to their own understanding.
